The Palms-Together Plank Pusher
SCAN DEPTH: 100%
Mechanism · Protocol Notes
Grab a dumbbell in each hand and stretch out on a flat bench with your feet planted firmly on the ground and your shoulder blades pulled together like they're trying to form a united front. Maintain a neutral grip throughout -- that means your palms are facing each other, like two old friends having a staring contest -- and begin with your arms extended straight above you, perpendicular to the floor. This is your launch configuration.
Initiate the movement by allowing your elbows to bend, gradually lowering your upper arms out to the sides. The weights descend until they reach roughly the level of your torso, at which point your chest muscles are stretched tighter than a pair of jeans after Thanksgiving dinner. Pause for a heartbeat at the bottom to really feel that stretch, because that brief moment of tension is where the growth stimulus lives.
Then you extend your elbows and return to the starting position, pressing those weights back toward the ceiling. The neutral grip changes the angle of attack compared to a traditional palms-forward press, placing slightly different emphasis on your pectoral fibers and often feeling more comfortable on the shoulder joints. It's a subtle variation that pays big dividends, especially for anyone whose shoulders complain during the standard version. Think of it as the diplomatic alternative -- same muscle-building results, fewer diplomatic incidents with your joints.
