So you thought the regular hip hinge was intense? Buckle up, because this version starts from the bottom and asks you to earn your standing position like you're paying off a mortgage. You set that barbell on a rack at roughly stomach height, lean underneath it, and park the bar across the back of your shoulders — same spot as before, not on top like a backpack. At this rack height, when you're crouched under the thing, your torso is nearly parallel to the floor. You're already in the trenches, folks.
Everything stays tight — shoulder blades squeezed together like they're trying to form a unified government, knees slightly bent, back arched, neck in line. From this low position, you begin the ascent by extending your hips, driving forward with your glutes and the back-of-the-leg crew until you're standing tall with the weight. You just deadlifted a back squat position, and honestly, you should feel a little bit like a superhero right now.
But wait, we're not done. You slowly lower that bar back down onto the safety pins — yes, there are pins involved, this exercise comes with a safety net — and return to your starting crouch. It's like a trust exercise where the pins catch you at the bottom, but your muscles still do all the dramatic heavy lifting on the way up. Repeat until your hamstrings have completely reevaluated their life trajectory.
