Alright, I need you to imagine something ridiculous for a second: you're lying on your side on a bench, clutching a dumbbell in one hand, and you're about to swing your forearm outward like you're opening the world's tiniest, heaviest door. Welcome to the rotary cuff's best friend — the side-lying outward rotation, and yes, it's every bit as glorious as it sounds.
Position yourself on your side with your lower arm tucked under your head for support and the upper hand gripping a weight. Bend that upper arm at a right angle so your forearm dangles in front of your torso, parallel to the ground. Your upper arm stays pinned against your ribcage throughout — think of it as glued there with industrial-strength adhesive. This locked-in position is your starting posture.
Now, rotate your forearm outward in a sweeping arc, like you're revealing a magic trick to an audience, until your digits point toward the ceiling. Squeeze at the top like you're trying to crack a safe, then gradually return to the starting orientation. The motion is small, the weight should be light, and the results are enormous for shoulder health and stability. After completing your reps on one side, flip over and give the other arm its turn in the spotlight. Trust me, your rotator cuff will write you a thank-you note.
