The Suspended Chest Plunge
SCAN DEPTH: 100%
Mechanism · Protocol Notes
Here's a fun scenario for you: place two low boxes or platforms about two to three feet apart, then position yourself between them in a push-up stance with your hands resting on top of the elevated surfaces. You're up high, supported, looking down at the ground like a proud eagle surveying its domain, and you're about to do something that defies every survival instinct your body possesses.
You press off those platforms with enough force to launch yourself into the air, and as you become temporarily airborne, you move your hands to shoulder-width apart on the ground between the boxes. You cushion your landing by absorbing the impact through your arms, like a gymnast sticking a dismount except way less graceful and way more chest-intensive. The moment your palms hit the floor, your pectoral muscles fire like emergency brakes, decelerating your entire bodyweight and converting downward momentum into eccentric loading.
This is a plyometric exercise, which is fancy fitness jargon for making your muscles stretch under load and then explode -- sort of like pulling back a rubber band and letting it snap. The eccentric loading followed by immediate stabilization is absolutely phenomenal for building explosive pushing power. It's essentially a depth jump for your upper body, and your chest will feel like it just negotiated a peace treaty with gravity. Start with low platforms and work your way up, unless you enjoy the sensation of your arms turning into overcooked pasta.
