Stretch out on a flat bench with a dumbbell perched on each thigh, palms looking at each other like they just spotted someone they went to high school with across the room. Use your legs to help kick those weights up one at a time until you're holding them at shoulder width with palms still facing inward. Press them up as if you were going to lock out, but stop just short -- hold them right there with a tiny bend in those elbows. This suspended position is your starting point, and it's where the real artistry begins.
With that slight, constant elbow bend -- and I mean constant, like a subscription you forgot to cancel -- you open your arms wide, lowering them in a sweeping arc until you feel an intense pull across your upper torso. Breathe in during this descent, because your muscles need oxygen and your lungs need something to do. The key insight here is that your arms function like hinges at the shoulder joint; everything below the shoulder should remain rigid and unmoving throughout the entire arc.
Return your arms along that same wide arc, bringing the weights back together at the top while squeezing those pectoral muscles and exhaling like you're blowing out birthday candles. Hold that contraction for a full second at the apex before repeating. This exercise stretches and contracts your chest through a massive range, which is why it feels like someone is simultaneously giving your muscles a hug and a homework assignment.
