The Foam Log Leg Ironing SCAN DEPTH: 100%

Mechanism · Protocol Notes

Okay, so you know that feeling when the back of your legs is so tight you're considering asking a stranger to walk on them? This is the solution, and it involves a foam roller, which is essentially a cylindrical torture device disguised as a pool noodle. You sit yourself down on the floor and drape your legs over the roller so it's sitting right under the back of your upper legs. Plant your hands on the ground beside you or slightly behind — these are your support crew for the duration of this adventure.

Now here's where the magic — and by magic, I mean controlled suffering — begins. You lift your hips off the ground using your arms and shift your weight so the roller is focused on one leg. Relax the hamstrings on that side — I know, it's counterintuitive, but you have to let the muscle go limp so the roller can do its deep-tissue interrogation. Then you roll, slowly, from just below your hip all the way down to just above the back of your knee.

When you hit a spot that makes you question every decision that led you to this moment, stop. Pause there for ten to thirty seconds and breathe through it like you're in a very unglamorous meditation class. Then continue rolling, hunting for the next hotspot. Once you've covered the full real estate on one leg, switch to the other and start the process over. By the end, your hamstrings will feel like they've been through a spa day run by someone who believes no pain no gain is a lifestyle.
