The Polite Bow of Doom SCAN DEPTH: 100%

Mechanism · Protocol Notes

Alright, so apparently some genius looked at a barbell and thought, 'What if I put this on my back and then just... bowed?' And thus, the most ironically named movement in all of fitness was born — because there is absolutely nothing polite about what this does to your hamstrings. You start with a barbell on a rack at shoulder height, hoist it onto the back of your shoulders — not on top of them, mind you, this isn't a cargo shelf — and keep everything tight. Shoulder blades pinched together like they're keeping a secret, knees with just the slightest whisper of a bend. Step away from the rack like you're leaving a conversation at a party.

Now you begin the descent by pushing your hips backward, hinging at the waist like you're trying to close a car door with your behind. Lower yourself until your torso is nearly parallel to the ground, keeping your spine arched and your neck in proper alignment — no turtle-heading, please. Your hamstrings and glutes are stretching to their absolute limit right now, and they're both sending you very strongly worded letters about this decision.

To return to standing, drive your hips forward using those same glutes and hamstrings that were just complaining. Extend until you're upright again, and congratulations, you've just completed one rep of the most humbling hinge in the building. Repeat until your posterior chain has filed a formal grievance.
