The Sled Ride to Quad Valhalla SCAN DEPTH: 100%

Mechanism · Protocol Notes

Step right up to the hack squat machine, which — let's be honest — looks like a piece of heavy machinery that got lost on its way to a construction site and ended up in a gym. You press your back flat against that padded surface and hook your shoulders under the provided cushions. Plant your feet on the platform about shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward like a penguin that's been hitting the gym. Head stays up, back stays glued to the pad — think of yourself as a very disciplined sandwich.

Grab the side handles and disengage the safety bars — usually by swinging those handles from forward to diagonal — and then straighten your legs without locking your knees. This is your starting altitude. From here, you begin the descent, bending at the knees while your posture stays bolt-upright. Sink down until your upper legs are roughly parallel to the platform, inhaling the whole way like you're sipping air through a very large straw. Your knees should track in line with your toes — if they're wandering past your toes, something has gone terribly wrong and you need to reassess your foot position immediately.

Then push back up through your heels, exhaling like a steam engine, straightening those legs until you're back at the top. Repeat for the prescribed reps, and enjoy the sensation of your quads staging a full-scale rebellion against the rest of your body.
